Spare parts and tools to carry

It is well  worth being prepared for breakdowns whilst away. Obviously, there will be specialised parts for particular vehicles, but this is intended as a general list to suit all vehicle types, that aren’t too specialised.

Remember when driving abroad, you now need to carry a set of replacement bulbs for your vehicle, as well as in France a Hi-viz vest for every occupant, and a warning triangle.

On older vehicles it is worth taking a towing strap. Use a modern tow web strap, for this ‘emergency’ purpose as they take up much less room than a traditional tow rope and are at least as strong. Also a couple of ‘D’ shackles are useful for attaching to either vehicle.

A good jack and wheel brace, as well as a wheel chock is essential. If you are trailering your MV abroad, its always a good idea to have a jack etc for the trailer as well as a spare wheel for same. There’s nothing worse than having a car trailer with a flat tyre and no spare or no tools to repair it, this can make any journey a nightmare!

Here is a list of spare parts, tools and fluids you should consider taking:

Availability in Normandy

Supermarkets hold a similar selection to the UK - great for basics, fuel additives and cleaning products, but it is more likely you will need to find a more specific dealer.  There are many general auto parts shops but some are more useful than others and it is useful to find staff that speak English if your French is limited.

If you do need to buy something, find a picture of the product or similar on your phone and take it to show the staff - it works a treat!

The EClerk Auto shop in Bayeux is very helpful and well stocked - good parking and easily accessible on the ring road, but there are equally good options in Carentan and Caen.

Use the search "autospares" in google maps. Most places will order an item overnight if you need. Just ask.
