Veterans' Stories
One of the most rewarding aspects of our visits to Normandy (and elsewhere) with our WW2 vehicles is being able to explore the personal stories of those who served in or witnessed the historic events that unfolded and visit their exact locations.
Our Uncle, William Jowitt, landed in Normandy on D-Day +3 and we have managed to piece together his journey as he fought through Normandy, northern France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. Visiting the places he did and following in his footsteps has given us a new and priceless level of understanding, appreciation and respect for what he and others like him experienced.

You don’t have to find a close relative; over the years we have followed in the footsteps of other men in his regiment, men from our local village, war correspondents and many others of different nationalities. There are hundreds of books and articles written by or about individual experiences; sometimes we happen across them by chance – a booklet in a museum, a grave - and sometimes, in between holidays, a book we have read will inspire us to research more so we can make a new ‘pilgrimage’ to follow that individual’s story. To read aloud a passage from a first-hand account about the exact spot you at, brings the history alive in a unique way.
